Rome, Italy, October 24, 2011– Pioneer Hi-Bred, a DuPont business, is uniquely positioned to address global food challenges by boosting crop yield and quality and delivering healthier food products. This is what Macy Merriman, Senior Government and Biotech Affairs Manager, Europe, Pioneer Hi-Bred today told representatives of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (U. N.) and the world’s largest food industry associations at the U.N. International Conference “The Sustainability of Food Systems And Diets For Stability.”

“We contribute to meeting the world’s growing needs for an abundant and quality food supply through advanced seed genetics, agronomic practices and support services as well as product innovations that help farmers maximize productivity and improve the nutritional quality of their crops,” commented Merriman. By delivering on this, Pioneer remains focused on its commitment to increase global food production in a sustainable way and meet the demand for healthier food, in the meanwhile minimizing agriculture’s environmental footprint.

“Soy is a good example of how Pioneer is addressing global food challenges. Demand for soy in human and livestock diets is increasing every year, and we face considerable challenges to meet that demand,” said Merriman. Pioneer is committed to increasing soybean productivity through advanced technologies such as the Accelerated Yield Technology (AYT™ system). “At the same time, Pioneer is addressing the need for higher-quality food by developing innovative seed products such as PlenishTM high oleic soybeans,” added Merriman.

PlenishTM, a Pioneer® brand soybean with an enhanced oil profile, offers functional and consumer benefits with improved oil performance. PlenishTM high oleic soybeans provide solid yields and agronomics for growers, functional oil benefits for the food industry and consumer benefits with 0g trans fat per serving and 20 percent less saturated fat than commodity soybean oil.

“Addressing global food challenges will require new levels of collaboration through public-private partnerships and other initiatives. No one company, university, NGO or government can solve these problems alone. It will take all of us, working in a concerted effort, to collectively deliver impactful results that improve the lives of people everywhere”, concluded Merriman.
