WEDA EuroTier Novelties 2022: Be.Well animal welfare housings, Quick.Gate barrier gate

Agro Napló
Good housing conditions for farm animals have become a broad social concern. To ensure that animal welfare is also implemented in practice, WEDA Dammann & Westerkamp has been providing animal-friendly, sustainable conditions in pig farming for years with its innovative, field-tested Be.Well animal welfare barns.

More space for people and animals

This applies, for example, to the layout of the movement pens, which offers sufficient space for animals and easier handling for farmers. The Be.Well farrowing pens and piglet houses from WEDA therefore have an outdoor run, which also allows the staff to clean the pens easily and quickly. “With our new plastic boards in wooden look, on the other hand, the hygiene standards under ecological husbandry conditions can be achieved quite easily because nothing sticks after cleaning,” argues WEDA development manager Ralf Meyer.

Quick cleaning with Quick.Gate

A matching element of the pens, which makes also cleaning the outside outlets easier, is the new Quick.Gate from WEDA. Its mode of operation is simple and ergonomic: When opened, the gate simultaneously closes the pens and forms a long corridor that can be mucked out with a loader in one go.

Same floor plan inspires confidence

The architecture of the Be.Well movement pens is also tailored to the basic needs of the animals in other respects. Sows and piglets can move freely in the straw and get fresh air at any time. The farrowing areas and piglet pens are also identically constructed so that the animals always have a familiar environment when they change areas.

Maximum protection

At the same time, the animal welfare houses also offer maximum protection: sows can farrow freely, but they can also be quickly restrained if necessary to largely exclude health risks for the animals due to biting or crushing.

Ecological, ergonomic, efficient

With these features, WEDA's Be.Well animal welfare housings have been proving their worth worldwide for years. Tailored to the respective conditions, they fulfil the high requirements of organic pig farming on the one hand. On the other hand, with their ergonomic standards, they ensure easy work processes and better production results in terms of animal welfare, hygiene and animal health and thus ultimately a maximum of animal welfare.

Quick.Gate barrier gate: Fast, ergonomic mucking out

With its Be.Well concept, WEDA Dammann & Westerkamp has focused not only on animal welfare but also on economic efficiency and occupational safety. Accordingly, the Be.Well products of the Lower Saxony stable equipment supplier are increasingly used in organic animal husbandry also under these aspects. In this sense, the new WEDA Quick.Gate enables simultaneous mucking out of several outdoor runs in one pass.

Farrowing pens with straw

In farrowing pens on organic farms, for example, it is increasingly common to line the outside runs with straw. This can increase the amount of work for the farmer, because regular mucking out of the stalls is necessary – not least to reduce odour pollution.

Quick.Gate swivels on both sides

In order to minimize this effort and make it as ergonomic as possible, WEDA has developed the Quick.Gate, which has a unique mechanism: When opened, the barrier gate automatically lifts out of the straw onto the side concrete edge by means of special hinges – with the side of the Quick.Gate that can be swivelled on both sides being fixed to the barn. This allows it to be opened quickly and easily in two directions without having to remove the manure.

Conventional solutions disadvantageous

In solutions with retaining wire, the gates only lift out to one side. They can be lifted out independently by the sows. In addition, the wire rope cannot be attached anywhere – for example, if there is a window or an open wall with wind netting.

20 outdoor outlets cleaned in ten minutes

With Quick.Gate, on the other hand, a long corridor forms along the entire length of the barn. The farmer can muck out the corridor with a tractor from one end to the other in one go. The bottom line is that, depending on the size of the system, 20 outside runs, for example, can be cleaned in about ten minutes. With Quick.Gate, users save a lot of time and energy that can be used for other activities in their daily work.
