How Fumonisins Jeopardize Pig Health and How to Solve It

How frequently fumonisins and other mycotoxins contaminate feed materials?

Multiple mycotoxins commonly contaminate swine feed materials at levels and in combinations that impair feed intake, pig health and performance.

Fumonisins –mycotoxins produced mainly by Fusarium verticillioides and F. proliferatum– are commonly found in corn (maize) and other pig diet ingredients. Fumonsins predispose pigs to porcine pulmonary edema (PPE), make them more susceptible to pathogens such as Pasteurella multocida and disrupt gut integrity.

Because mycotoxin binders are not particularly effective against fumonisins, novel biotransformation strategies are needed to protect both animals and profits.
