Main results of the Council on Agriculture and Fisheries, 24/03/2014

Promotion for agricultural products Ministers held a new policy debate on the proposal for promotion measures for agricultural products on the internal market and in third countries. A majority of member states agreed on the compromise proposal put forward by the Presidency. Minister Tsaftaris concluded that "We now have a mandate to negotiate with the European Parliament. We hope soon to be able to adopt a proposal in first reading before the end of the term of office of the current Parliament."

Organics: Commission proposal for more and better

The European Commission has published new proposals for a new Regulation on organic production and the labelling of organic products. Consumer and producer concerns are at the heart of this new proposal, which seeks to address shortcomings of the current system. The EU organic market has quadrupled in size over the last 10 years and rules need to be updated and adjusted so that the sector can further develop and respond to future challenges.
