Lemken again showing double-digit growth

Extensive investment planned at Alpen site

Lemken, the specialist for professional farming, is ending the 2012 financial year with another record result: in the past year the Lemken group has generated € 340 million in sales revenue worldwide and, with a growth rate of 20%, has passed the € 300 million mark for the first time. The company’s workforce rose to 1,070.

“Above all, the good prices for agricultural products led to a positive mood among farmers, who are continuing to professionalise by investing in modern agricultural machinery”, explains Managing Director Dr. Franz-Georg von Busse. His new colleague and spokesperson for the Lemken board, Anthony van der Ley, adds: “The high capacity utilisation at the start of the new year points to continuing excellent business performance.” The agricultural specialist’s current growth is also demonstrated by its investment plans. Over the next five years, Lemken has plans for new workshops, production plants and supply facilities representing a total investment of over € 50 million. This investment is centred primarily on expansion at the Alpen site, where substantial development of production and assembly capacity is the target. In addition, by mid-2013, construction is scheduled to begin on the new development plant, which will house the rapidly expanding engineering workforce together with the test hall.

The positive trend in business is the result of increasing turnover in almost every sales region. On the German domestic market, Lemken increased turnover by 14%. Performance was equally encouraging in France, the company’s largest export market. The UK market also showed a positive trend. On Lemken's vital Eastern European markets, additional project business made a major contribution to growth. Young markets such as South Africa, Canada and China, where Lemken has set up initial sales structures, showed excellent growth, confirming that the company is on the right track. Overall, the export ratio rose to 73%.

Virtually all product groups benefited from the growth in sales. A particularly pleasing development was the increase in ploughs, where Lemken has greatly enhanced its range with the new Juwel generation of mounted ploughs with DuraMaxx bodies and the new Diamant semi-mounted ploughs. The blue seed drills sold similarly well. In the still new product sector of field sprayers, Lemken strengthened its market position with the re-engineered mounted sprayers Sirius 8 and 10. A total of just under 15,000 machines were produced at the German sites in Alpen, Föhren and Meppen.

Lemken now has 22 subsidiaries worldwide. Given the rising proportion of turnover generated by these distribution companies and the new Indian plant in Nagpur, which commenced operation in autumn 2012, Lemken will publish the group turnover figures from now on. From the coming year, the figures will also include the turnover of the new assembly plant in Qingdao, which is set to go into operation in mid-2013. With this production plant of its own, Lemken will also have a presence in China, which is an important future market for agricultural machinery.

Another important step in securing the future of the Lemken family business was the appointment on 1 November 2012 of the new Managing Director, Anthony van der Ley, in a move that both expanded the management team and initiated a smooth generational change at the head of the family business. Provided the positive investment mood among farmers and contractors continues, Mr Van der Ley expects 2013 to bring further growth, although not to the same extent as in the two previous years. Given the challenges facing the agricultural engineering industry, namely contributing to global food security and energy supplies, the agricultural engineering specialist believes it is ideally positioned for the future.
